The Chimpanzee is man’s closest living relative, sharing more than 98% of our genetic code. The name Chimpanzee comes from the Tshiluba language and means “mock-man”. In the wild, Chimps, as they are commonly called, rarely live past 40 years old, but in captivity have aged past 60 years old. Chimpanzees live in extended family units, which can be several hundred in number, and are called communities. Like man, Chimps are Omnivore mammals and have been documented using tools. Their status as “endangered” is a direct result of man. Like man, the size of any one individual can vary greatly from another, but the average size seems to be 4 to 5 ½ feet tall and 70 to 130 lbs. Chimps are a member of the Great Ape family and are NOT a monkey. There are two types of Chimpanzees; the Common Chimpanzee from West and Central Africa and the Bonobo Chimpanzee from the Congo.
